What is a Homage Stamp?
Homage stamps are created to pay respect to another
letterboxer. They usually look like the letterboxer's personal
stamp, but with a slight change in the stamp's image and name.
They may also take a cue from the signature stamp, something that
identifies who it is about. A few look completely different then
the signature stamp, but are a wordplay on the stamp.
How did they come about?
I think the blame can be laid squarely on the
shoulders of the "Hairy Legged Boxers," a group of
letterboxers that collaborate and then go find Mapsurfer
boxes.
It all came about several years ago when we were on a
particularly long hike (much longer then it should have been,
actually). We were discussing other letterboxers that they
liked, and in particular Silent
Doug. Someone called him Silent Duck, which I found pretty
funny.
"You know, I could make that stamp, it would be
simple, just take his stamp and add a duck bill."
Thus Silent Duck was born, along with several other
silent characters, such as Silent Dog, Silent Duke, and Silent Dude.
How can I get these images?
They started out as alter ego characters, and have
pretty much remained that way. They show up at gatherings on event
boards and in letterboxes. Some people carry them as personal
travelers. Some create them and then hand them off to someone else
to move around.
Usually you have to figure out who is carrying which
one and then ask for the image. Sometimes they are simply passed
around.
They are indigenous to the Mid Atlantic region, but
they are spreading.
