Letterboxing and Logbook

Letterboxing is my other hobby.  It is a great combination of writing, artistry, crafting, creativity, and problem solving in the outdoors.  You can find out all about letterboxing right here on this page.

What is Letterboxing?

First box of the "Ball's Bluff" series in Leesburg, VA.
What it comes down to is this; it is a treasure hunt.  The way it works is this, someone hides a letterbox out in the world somewhere, and then posts clues as to where that box is, and then you go and find it.

When you find that box, inside you will find a logbook and a stamp.  With you you bring your own logbook (you can view mine below) and your own personal stamp.  You put an image of your stamp in the boxes logbook, and an image of the box's stamp into your logbook to prove you found it.  That is pretty much the bare bones of how it works.  There are all sorts of variations on how it works, and that is where the creativity comes in.

You can find more information as well as clues for tons of boxes at these great websites:

My Online Logbook

My personal stamp
I am continually amazed by the effort and artwork that are found in letterboxes.  The creativity of letterboxers seems to be boundless, in the stamps that are hand carved, in the locations chosen for boxes, and in how clues are written.  That is why I have created an online logbook, so that I can show just a small sampling of that wonder and creativity.

I think of it just as if I were at a gathering showing you my logbook, telling the tales of the adventures in finding certain boxes, and enticing you to go and visit some of those same boxes.  There are many great boxes all over the nation, and even the world, and I hope you find some inspiration in these pages to head out and find some of them.

- WARNING -

Stamp images from boxes are shown on these pages.  If you do not wish to see them (if you want to be surprised by finding a box), then do not look in my logbook.

What's New:

A new section dedicated to Homage Stamps has been created.  Read about what they are and see some of the creative carvings made to represent some of our fellow letterboxers.
